Sean

When I walk up to the house to pick her up, she appears in the door before I can climb up the front steps. She opens the screen door and whizzes past me on the driveway. “Let’s go.”

I don’t know if she got the message. I’m pretty sure I said we’d be going to Great Adventure, hadn’t I?

So, why is my date wearing high heels?

Not to say she doesn’t look fabulous. I’m sure she even looks tasty when she wakes up in the morning, before she puts on all that make-up and stuff. I mean, I saw her at her worst. Even at her worst, she looked pretty damn good.

And from the way she’s hustling, it’s obvious she can manage in those shoes, but still . . . seems like not the wisest choice. That’s like Lana. Always so into looking good, screw feeling good. But I get this feeling this is all a part of the act. Hannah is all about the performance. She let her guard down for about two seconds in the coffee shop, and in my van. I almost saw someone, a real person under all that make-up and overt sexuality.

“I point at her feet. First, you’ve got to change those.”

She looks down. “Why? I always wear heels.”

“Yeah, but we’re going to be walking around an amusement park. You should have sneakers on or something. Won’t that hurt?”

She shrugs. “Maybe. But I couldn’t find my sneakers.”

“You have anything else without a heel?”

“Not really.”

“All right,” I tell her. “There are Factory Outlets on the way. We’ll stop at Nike.”

She walks to the door of my van and pulls on the handle before I can open it for her. “Not necessary. I can handle myself.”

I have to admit, she looks like a girl who handles herself quite well. I’ve loved girls done up to the nines, but nevertheless, I’ve always ended up with them. And she’s hands-down fabulous, the hottest thing I’ve ever seen. She’s wearing this little dress that’s flowered and innocent-looking, not so much sexy but sweet, and her hair is down loose. When she gets into the front of the van, I smell her perfume. I take giant whiffs of it, because it’s incredible.

Hell, she has nothing to worry about. Looking as good as she does, if she gets a blister, I’ll happily carry her anywhere she wants to go.

“You have a good night?” I ask her as I’m pulling out from the front of her house.

She nods. “Fridays are always good.”

“Are they? You go out?”

Her face reddens. “Oh. No, I stayed in. What I mean is . . .” She stops. I don’t know what she’s so nervous about.

When it’s clear she’s not going to continue, I say, “Well, I stayed in, too. I do EMT stuff on the weekends sometimes, but not until tonight, so I was kind of beat. I guess we must be party animals.”

She laughs nervously. She’s rubbing at her elbow, and I know she’s thinking of that night. “Um. Yeah.
